The legacy of the lost Lolitas

A lace-trimmed blouse with a puffy pastel skirt in delicate cotton prints is reminiscent of a pretty flower in the warm sunshine and a common style among young ladies.

Ara Chan Chi-ling, a Lolita loyalist for years and a current Lolita forum keeper, admits that being a Lolita is not easy.

Some Lolitas have eggs thrown at them in the street, others receive dirty looks, insults and scoffs.

She herself underwent a difficult break up with her boyfriend because she does Lolita.

“People think we are over-exaggerated, but we are just being ourselves, we do nothing wrong,” says Ara.

Two years ago, it was easy to spot girls in full Lolita outfits hanging out in the streets of Mong Kok, but nowadays is a different story.

Natalie, the founder of Spider, another Lolita forum, has no choice but to change her ways. She used to fully dress in Lolita when she was keeping the shop, but now she doesn’t.

Her shop used to only sell full Lolita dresses and accessories, but now simplified Lolita clothes occupy one-third of her inventory.

“Some don’t like the change, but we have to do it to suit the taste of the general population,” says Natalie.

When asked to explain the falling trend, Ara replies that pressure from people’s rejection as well as the strict rules enforced in Lolita are two major reasons.

If you are a Sweet Lolita, you should smile in every situation. If you are a Gothic Lolita, you should be cool in every thing.

Likewise, if you are a Gothic-Elegant Lolita, you should act indifferent and if you are a Classical Lolita, you should be elegant in every way.

“All Lolitas are not allowed to speak vulgar language, we have to be elegant enough not to fire back even if we are scorned by someone, which is one of the things I don’t like about being a Lolita,” says Ara.

“Lolitas should never be vulgar in anyway (verbally, or sexually, etc.)”: a famous motto for every Lolita.

“It’s more than just clothes, we should behave as well as possible so as not to bring Lolita a bad name,” Ara says. “I learned a lot after becoming a Lolita”.

She tries to speak less vulgar language and she continually learns to respect others more.

“Being a Lolita is not playing dress-up, it’s a lifestyle choice,” she says.
